Now that you're playing some notes, let's take a moment to review the basics of music composition. Understanding these fundamentals can eliminate frustration and make your playing and creation experience more enjoyable and meaningful. If you know these basics, feel free to skip this section.
Music compositions are built around a structure, much like a story. You're crafting poetry with sounds, creating a mood for the listener, and evoking emotions. To keep the listener engaged, you need to change the mood and atmosphere at different stages. Think of it like a book with lines, paragraphs, pages, and chapters. Most importantly, remember that the story is the most crucial component.
In music, the story needs a hook—the memorable part that stays in the listener's consciousness. The characters in your composition are the instruments, sounds, and voices, and how they are performed and combined. Every composition must have rhythm, which underpins all great music.
