Scale Degree Positions for Chord Selection Matrix

In the default setting, chord positions are shown in their ascending scale degree positions with Roman numeral indicators.

You can display the chord positions in a Circle of Fifths profile by selecting the “Circle of Fifths” icon.

Before we start playing Chords, we will revisit scale degree positions of major and minor keys. Scale degree positions are identified in Roman Numerals, as shown below. Please see our Introduction to Music Theory for an explanation of the theory behind the construction of keys, chords, and chord progressions in detail.

Each Chord sector is labelled in the Chord Selection Matrix as being either Major/Minor/Dim or Aug

  • For major keys, major chords are in scale positions I, IV, and V.

  • For major keys, minor chords are in scale positions ii, iii, and vi.

  • For major keys, the diminished Chord is in scale positions vii.

  • For minor keys, minor chords are in scale positions I, IV, and V.

  • For minor keys, major chords are in scale positions iii, vi. and vii

  • For minor keys, the diminished chord is in scale positions ii.

A chord with a single uppercase or an uppercase letter affixed is a Major Chord. A lowercase letter affixed to a chord name is a Minor Chord. Major and minor chords can also have a Flat or Sharp identifier affixed to their name.

The triads and seventh chords are shown on the bottom and middle rows.

The parallel key triad chords are shown on the top row.
