Connecting ChordWalk running on a Windows PC with a USB-enabled MIDI Synthesiser Keyboard

Connecting USB Synthesizers and MIDI Devices

USB 2.0A to B cable

  1. Using USB 2.0A to B Cable:

    • Most USB synthesizers and MIDI-enabled devices use a USB 2.0A to B cable. Connect your Windows PC or USB hub to your synthesizer, synthesizer keyboard, or MIDI-enabled device using this cable.

    • ChordWalk will recognize the connected devices and display them as MIDI destinations. From ChordWalk, you can select individual instrument sounds supported by your synthesizer or MIDI playing device.

  2. Connecting Advanced USB Synthesizers:

    • Advanced, independently powered USB synthesizers often support MIDI in/out DIN connectors, allowing MIDI data transfer to other MIDI-enabled devices.

    • Note: Many USB-powered synthesizers do not provide power to the MIDI out port, which is necessary to power Bluetooth MIDI transmitters.

  3. Direct USB Connection:

    • You can connect your PC USB port directly to your synthesizer USB port using a USB 2.0A to B cable. This setup allows ChordWalk to recognize and communicate with your synthesizer.

  4. Using Bluetooth MIDI:

    • Attach a Yamaha MD-BT01 Bluetooth MIDI transmitter to the MIDI DIN ports of your synthesizer. This enables data transfer to an Apple device or any MIDI Bluetooth-compatible playing device.

    • The BT01 will be recognized by any Apple device in the advanced settings.

When connected correctly, the red LED on the BT 01 will be active as shown in the photo above..

Example Configuration

  • Korg Monologue Synthesizer:

    • The picture below shows a Korg Monologue independent powered synthesizer connected using a USB 2.0A to B cable from an Apple or PC device.

    • Additionally, you can establish a Bluetooth MIDI connection by fitting a Yamaha MD-BT01 Bluetooth MIDI transmitter to the MIDI ports of the Korg Monologue.

Data Transfer and Control

  • In this configuration, the data stream from ChordWalk is forwarded directly to the BT01, along with any keyboard selections and activity from the Korg Monologue.

  • Note: Pitch bend adjustments made on the Korg Monologue will also be forwarded with the MIDI stream to the playing device.

By following these steps, you can efficiently connect and configure your USB synthesizers and MIDI devices to work seamlessly with ChordWalk, enhancing your music creation and performance experience.
