Each note can move forward or backwards one position from its natural white position.

As we apply the scale pattern template to different starting note positions, black note positions will feature in all the major keys except for the C major key.

As the major scale pattern template ensures that the notes maintain their relative positions as we move the tonic note position up or down, the black note positions will come into play prominently.

When a note moves forward or backwards from their natural white position, the note is classified as sharp (♯)) or flat (♭) respectively.

As we move through the major key section, notes will move sharp ♯ or flat ♭, one position from their natural white positions for different key selections.

Once the first note position of the key is selected, the scale pattern advises the positions of all notes for that major key.

Note: There is no black position between E and F or between B and C.

E and B move forward to their adjacent white sharp (♯) positions.

Both E and B can move back to their adjacent black flat ♭ positions.
